- a broadband internet connection capable of 500+ Kbps is recommended
MPO has an inbuilt 'Configuration Check' so that you can automatically test if your computer is ready. Please refer to the FAQ: How do I check if my computer is ready for MPO?
Anchor Point:7
How do I check if my computer is ready for MPO?
On the MPO login page, click the 'Configuration Check' link, which will open a new window or tab. Wait for the page to load completely, giving you the results of the configuration check.
If the results are all 'OK', you are ready to start using MPO.
If you see 'Failed' next to any of the requirements, you should take the appropriate measures. For example, if you only have Flash 5 but the required version of Flash is 8 and above, then you should download the latest version of the Flash player.
If you are unsure about how to proceed, please contact us by clicking 'Contact Us' at the top of this page. Copy the results of the configuration check and paste them into the 'Comments' field of the contact form. Please also provide your MPO username.
Anchor Point:8
Why was my result not saved in the Markbook/Gradebook?
There are several common reasons why exercise results are not stored in the MPO Markbook/Gradebook:
• Completing a resource from outside the Courses area
When viewing and completing resources, ensure that you are doing so from your assigned course. If you navigate to a resource from outside the Courses area (e.g. from My Bookmarks), your marks from completing this resource will not be recorded.
• Two-part exercises left incomplete
If a resource has two parts, both parts have to be completed before the results will appear in the Markbook/Gradebook. After submitting answers for the first part, click 'Answers' in the results pop-up box. Then click the forward arrow (>) at the top to move to the second part of the exercise. Remember, the forward arrow will not appear until you click 'Answers'.
• Problem with network or internet connection
On rare occasions, a problem with the internet connection may be the cause. If there is a network interruption, it is possible that the results data may not be submitted properly. If this happens, you will see an alert message:
"There has been a problem. Your mark has not been recorded. Do you want to try to submit your mark again? Your mark was: xy%"
You should click 'OK' in the message box to re-submit the exercise. If the same message appears, you should close the exercise and re-open it, then try the exercise again.
Anchor Point:9
Why do I see 'Viewed' and not a percentage for certain resources in the Markbook/Gradebook
Grammar Reference Units, Games, Sample Essays and Web Projects will display 'Viewed' in the Markbook/Gradebook when they are completed as part of your course. All other resource types will show the number of times you have completed them (attempts), and the first and last dates you did this.
Anchor Point:10
Exercises are not displaying correctly.
If your MPO exercise is not displaying properly (e.g. in exercises with gapfills, the gap appears too large and obscures other text), this could be due to an unsupported operating system, browser or Flash version. Please refer to the FAQ: How do I check if my computer is ready for MPO?
If the text of an exercise displays correctly, but the image or audio does not load at all, this could be due to a firewall or antivirus software blocking them. Please try using MPO from a different computer at a different location. If the problem continues, inform your teacher and contact us by clicking 'Contact Us' at the top of this page.
Anchor Point:11
Exercise does not load.
If you click 'View' to open an exercise, but it does not load at all, try refreshing the page by pressing F5. If this does not work, log out of MPO and log in again.
If you are using MPO on a very saturated local network, you may experience slower loading of pages and exercises. Although the MPO servers are capable of handling large numbers of concurrent users, the speed and performance of MPO also depend on the amount of bandwidth available on your internet or network connection.
Anchor Point:12
When I open the Dictionary, my MPO page disappears.
When you open the Dictionary from MPO, the Dictionary page opens in a new window or tab. Your MPO screen will remain available behind the Dictionary screen.
Anchor Point:13

I have forgotten to click the log out button and have closed my browser. How can I log back in to MPO?

Anchor Point:15Voice Record and Playback does not work: an error message appears.
If the Voice Record and Playback opens, but the recording function does not work, and you see a window with a "Connect. Failed" error message, this could be due to a firewall blocking the communication. Voice Record and Playback records an audio stream over the Internet, from your microphone to a Macmillan media server; in order for Voice Record and Playback to work correctly, it is essential that any firewalls on the computer are set up to allow this traffic. You will need to configure the firewall so that it allows Real-Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) traffic on port 1935; please consult the documentation for the particular firewall to find out how to do this.
